The findings of the survey on the Curdies shows the concern the people have for the current and future health of this river system. The survey was launched in late October 2023 and closed late December 2023, before all the summer tourists had arrived in Peterborough. A total of 206 responses were received, including one from New Zealand, highlighting the international appeal of this part of the world.
The value of the Curdies as an ecosystem was reinforced and the key findings, when broken down can be seen as:
- Consistent concerns regarding the water quality;
- Persistent concerns regarding agricultural practices;
- Recognition of the implications of river degradation on flora and fauna: birdlife was of major concern; fish species and fishing concerns; and flora and fauna in general;
- Appreciation for the beauty and cultural value of the river and estuary;
- Emphasis on the need for monitoring, management, research and collaboration;
- The influence of duck hunting lobby groups.
Many people took the time to write careful and considered responses. Some additional points to consider are:
- Our broader community has a profound connection to the river and estuary, this was reflected both in the quantity and quality of responses received.
- Some respondents exhibited limited understanding of the ecosystem's complexity, highlighting the importance of community education and engagement initiatives.
- Responses reflected a consideration of the Curdies River's historical significance, with many expressing a pessimistic outlook for the future due to perceived historical pollution and neglect.
- There was a clear expectation among respondents for active leadership from authorities, emphasising the need for initiatives beyond volunteer efforts to address community concerns effectively.
The information contained within this survey provides the Curdies River Consultative Committee evidence of the concern that exists within all the communities within the Curdies system, and for those who treasure our environment but who don't live in our area. It is important for the ongoing work of this committee.
Thank you to all who participated.
