If you like exploring, you'll like Wild Dog Cove, it's a fossiker's paradise too and like all the beaches in Peterborough, it presents a different face throughout the year. When the tide is low at the end of a hot summer's day, it is pure magic. After a stormy high tide, the beach throws up seaweed and sponges and other things torn from the reefs. Whatever the time of the year, whatever the season, Wild Dog Cove is a special place indeed.
As you come down the steps, you can turn left into the reefed beach locals call Crazy Kate, or left to the broad sweep of beach with the arched rock at the far end.
Features:
left of the steps to Crazy Cate:
- There is a toddlers 'swimming pool' in the reef here that is just right when the tide is low.
- The is the larger big 'swimming pool' with the sandy bottom, flanked by two reefs.
- Snorkling is a great way to explore the reefs and fish and underwater gardens.
- At a low tide, exploring small rock pools is fascinating.
- If you walk just one small cove further along, perhaps getting the feet wet, there is a great beach to climb rocks and play pirates.
Right of the steps to the arched rock:
- Walk along this beach to enjoy the immersive experience of sea, sky and cliffs.
- At this end of the cove, explore the rocks: climb through the archway (only possible at low tide).
- See if you can climb the large rocks that sit in the water.
- Investigate the different seaweeds thrown onto the shore.
- Find weirdly shaped stones that sit in the hand.
Note:
- Our beaches are special places for everyone to enjoy, if you are fossicking, removing shells and suchlike from the beach is generally discouraged. The exception is the child carrying those special mementoes in their hand.
- Do not leave your rubbish on the beach, we want our beaches to be clean. If you can pick up any plastics you find on the beach to dispose of appropriately, that is much appreciated.
