The hinterland surrounding Peterborough is referred to as the Heytesbury.
Up until the 1960s, it was forested until the great land clearing exercise removed the Heytesbury forest to create dairy farms. Today, remnants of that forest can be seen , for example surrounding the quaint rural town of Timboon. The town of Cobden is reknown for it's milk and butter factory and sits well off the beaten track. These two are the largest towns in the Heytesbury and are worth a visit, even if only for the drive there and back.
Upriver, at Curdievale is the Boggy Creek Hotel, established in 1853, it is a place to stop for a counter lunch and a quiet drink looking down on the Curdies River. It is one of the places where you wish the walls could speak to you and tell you the tales of the past.
